The 2011 film The Artist , directed by Michel Hazanavicius, is a modern silent film and black-and-white homage to the golden age of Hollywood cinema. Set between 1927 and 1932, it tells the story of George Valentin (played by Jean Dujardin), a celebrated silent movie star whose career declines as he stubbornly refuses to adapt to the arrival of "talkies". In contrast, Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), a young extra whom George once helped, rises to stardom as she embraces the new era of sound.
