When Dire Straits entered New York’s Power Station in the summer of 1980 to record their third album, Making Movies , the band was in a state of flux. Tensions between frontman Mark Knopfler and his brother, rhythm guitarist David Knopfler, peaked during the sessions, leading to David’s departure mid-album. Under the production of Jimmy Iovine—known for his work with Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith—Mark Knopfler steered the band toward a more expansive, cinematic sound. While the title evokes Shakespeare’s tragedy, the song’s roots were deeply personal and contemporary. Knopfler wrote the track following his abrupt breakup with Holly Vincent, leader of the band Holly and the Italians . The lyrics reflect his disillusionment; Knopfler suspected Vincent had used their relationship to advance her own career, a sentiment captured in the cutting line: "How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?" .
