Unlike many episodes that deal with Mafia politics or crimes of passion, "Treasure Hunt" is a psychological thriller. The antagonist treats the investigation as a game, forcing Montalbano to follow a trail of clues that leads him through the dark corners of the human psyche.

What initially seems like an isolated case of religious fanaticism quickly takes a sinister turn when a second, identical doll is found in a trash bin.
