I grabbed the rope just as the world began to dissolve into white light.
I moved through the tall grass, my heart hammering against my ribs. Every few steps, I threw a brass shell casing ahead of me. Clink. It hit the ground and stayed. Safe. Three steps forward. Clink. The shell hit an invisible pocket of distorted gravity and zipped upward into the clouds at Mach speed. I froze, my breath hitching in my throat.
I woke up back in Vanno, the hum of the electric lights the only sound. I looked at the film canister in my hand, then at the computer terminal to turn in my mission.
