He wasn't in his office anymore; he was standing on a pier in 1970s Maine, watching a man with a guitar case walk toward a waiting boat.

He opened the text file. It contained only one line: Elias froze

Curiosity overriding caution, Elias launched the executable. His speakers didn't emit music. Instead, they began to hum—a low, oscillating frequency that made the water in the glass on his desk ripple in perfect concentric circles. Then, a voice, gravelly and aged, whispered through the static. "You're late, Elias."
