It was tough as nails. If you didn't manage your troop skills, equipment, and positioning perfectly, you would get absolutely wiped in the later campaigns.
There really hasn't been a game since that quite scratches this exact itch. Released originally on the Xbox back in 2004 (and later brought to PC), this game was way ahead of its time.
