The story follows Arizona Colt, a skilled gunfighter who is among a group of prisoners freed during a mass jailbreak orchestrated by the bandit leader Torrez Gordo. Gordo offers the escapees a choice: join his "Sidewinder" gang (marked by a branded "S") or die. Arizona refuses both, choosing to "think about it" before heading to the town of Blackstone Hill.
