On October 15, 2009, 31-year-old building surveyor Stefano Cucchi was arrested in Rome for possession of hashish and cocaine. Though fit when taken into custody, he appeared in court the following day with visible bruising and difficulty walking. While in custody, Stefano was brutally assaulted by members of the Carabinieri (military police).
Stefano died alone in a prison hospital wing on October 22, 2009.
